Technology

Eternal Star uses advanced technology to ensure that your photographs will be maintained on the internet permanently.

All methods of recording photographs are vulnerable to loss or destruction. House fires, floods, earthquakes, tornados, families loosing them, loss of identification of who is in the picture and stories about them, are all vulnerable to the ravages of time. Even storing them in multiple copies or placing them on CD or DVD—these methods are all prone to eventual destruction.

The only solution is the internet. They can be found by searching for them in any search engine. And the internet system is structured so that it can have master files located in different parts of the world. It is interconnected to keep any one of these files’ locations from loosing its data.

Eternal Star has employed these technical advantages of the internet to preserve your photographs and memories permanently:

  • Internet hosting is on a dedicated Linux server with guaranteed 99.9% up time.

  • Loss of data is secured by a duplicate mirror site providing redundant hosting.

  • The mirror sites periodically perform a data cross check to correct any degraded information

  • Data is further protected by file copies being maintained by Eternal Star, Inc., in an off-site tertiary location in electronic format.
  • With the passage of time all electronic material degrades. Oxidation of the medium upon which it was recorded, cosmic rays destroying electronic storage bytes, numerous events slowly deteriorate anything recorded on paper or any medium. The mirror sites used by Eternal Star are constantly scanning to detect degradation in files through a self-correcting algorithm, thus identifying any degradation and, if found, repairing it.

Additionally, throughout time languages have changed. Within 500 years, each language has shifted until it is barely recognizable, within 1,000 years it is not readable by anyone but a linguist. Try reading Chaucer or any other surviving text that is greater than 500 years old.

As time progresses, the language on this website will be altered into a more modern translation. Every 250 years it will be necessary to evoke a sweep of the site’s pages to provide a current translation. When this is done, both the original version and the duplicate will be maintained and both will be hosted.

While many of these activities will not be noticed by the next few generations, these activities will be important to preserve these records for the next 20 generations and beyond.

The trust fund will be adequately funded from each membership to provide income from interest (based on a very low 1% annualized rate of return) to provide for duplicate site hosting, language translation, and future management of the system.

You are leaving your message for the future on Eternal Star.
